Van Speyk was born in 1802 in Amsterdam. He started training as a tailor, but ended up as a lieutenant at sea. Instead of surrendering when his ship is attacked by a group of Antwerp insurgents, he decides to blow up his ship and thus also himself. With this a hero was born. By linking the name of Lieutenant Van Speyk to this young Dutch watch brand, Van Speyk emphasizes its Dutch identity and national pride.
