Movement provides energy to the automatic movement. Almost all watch winders rotate the watches in circles so that the automatic movement obtains energy. But there are also models from Bernard Favre, for example, where the watch rotates on its own axis. The Orbita brand has a different way of winding. The models from this brand from the United States slowly shake the watches up and down. All these winding techniques have the same result: they supply energy to the automatic movement so that the watch continues to function and does not come to a standstill.

In this article we write about watch winders with a sleep mode. The sleep mode is a function that ensures that the watch winder only turns and winds the watches during the day. At night, the watch winder remains stationary, to imitate your day/night rhythm, as it were. Most people do not wear their watch when they sleep. The advantage of a watch winder with sleep mode is that you do not hear any sound from this watch accessory at night. A watch winder always makes a certain amount of sound. The amount of sound is strongly dependent on the quality of the watch accessory. For example, consider the brand/type of motors, the materials, finish and design. In our opinion, a good watch winder does not need a sleep mode because it already functions virtually silently. However, if you have a relatively cheap watch winder, this function can be useful. After all, the motors then make more noise and that may be disturbing if you want to sleep well.

The general opinion is that good motors and a closed design (so with a door or lid) are a better alternative. In addition, a sleep function is not always easy to set. Do not forget that the sleep mode is often a complicated function because you cannot set it per day but do this for every evening/morning. So you have little flexibility in terms of setting options.

A watch winder with sleep mode is therefore not a “must have” in our opinion. In some cases it is a useful function, but also keep the disadvantages in mind. Think of a higher price and often motors of lower quality.
